H. Lewis III Firearms Training Academy

Our Instructors are firearms experts. They have diverse backgrounds ranging from training Police SWAT units to graduating from the U.S. Military Sniper School. All of our instructors are NRA Certified Firearms Instructors and NRA Range Safety Officers.

Basic Pistol Classes

Name : NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation4 hours

Description : Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training — is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers. NRA FIRST Steps Pistol is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.

Equipment: Paper, pencil, firearms (pistol .38 cal or higher), ammo, targets, eye, ear protection.

Name : NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course8 hours

Description : Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet; take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate.

Equipment: Paper, pencil, firearms (pistol .38 cal or higher), ammo, targets, eye, ear protection.

Advanced Pistol Classes

Name : Advanced Pistol Skills8 hours

Description : Teaches advanced firearms quick draw shooting, tactical reloading, malfunction drills, and engaging simultaneous targets. This course is designed to take the shooter from a basic level of marksmanship and weapons handling to a higher level of firearm proficiency¸ tactics, and skill set. For this reason, the student will need to show successful completion of the NRA Pistol First Steps and Basic Pistol classes or pass a proficiency test. Students will learn techniques for faster and more accurate shooting from the draw, tactical reloading, engaging multiple targets, malfunction drills, and failure drills.

Equipment: Paper, pencil, firearms (pistol .38 cal or higher), ammo, targets, eye, ear protection.

Name : Plain Clothes and Concealed Carry Skills8 hours

Description : Educates students who carry firearms in a concealed manner, with a Georgia Conceal Carry permit, on the laws governing concealed carry rights in this state. Also, the course teaches students how to safely engage targets from a concealed holster. This course will provide the student who carries a firearm with a concealed carry permit with information about Georgia concealed carry laws and skills to safely and accurately engage targets from a concealed holster. The student will need to have a higher level of weapons handling skills than a beginning shooter. For this reason, the student will need to show successful completion of the Advance Pistol Skills class. Students will learn how to legally carry a concealed weapon in Georgia, physiological and psychological factors that affect marksmanship in a high-stress encounter, different methods of concealed carry holsters and weapons, and how to safely engage targets quickly and accurately from a concealed holster in a variety of situations; including seated and from a vehicle.

Name : Tactical Pistol Skills12 hours

Description : The student will learn how to shoot while moving, shoot at moving targets, shoot from various types of cover, and shoot from unorthodox or unusual positions as well as stress-shooting and shoot/no shoot target identification. This course will provide the student with far advanced levels of skill in handling and shooting a firearm. The student will need to show successful completion of the Advanced Pistol Skills and Plainclothes and Concealed Carry courses to proceed.
